Technology Reflection Questions & Inspirations
Digital technology is ever-present in our world. It can be a massive asset for your life, but it often forms us in ways that are counter to the way of Jesus. Becoming Amish likely isn’t the answer for many people when it comes to the problem of how technology forms us. Instead, we need to consider the effects of technology in our lives and then set some wise boundaries for how we will use tech in our daily rhythms.

Technology Reflection Questions
Think through the following questions. Document your answers and ideas in a journal as you unpack them.
Do you think the people who know you best would say you spend a lot of time on your phone, on social media, watching TV shows, in front of screens?
Go to Settings on your phone and note how much time you spend each day and week on your phone and doing what. How do you feel about what you find?
In what ways do you find technology/digital media potentially useful and good, and in what ways has it been personally detrimental?
If you are a parent, would you be okay if your child utilized technology in the same ways or for the same amount of time that you do?
Think about a time when you binged on your phone or on the internet. Can you recall how you felt afterward?
What benefits could be found in limiting your use of technology?
Technology Boundary Inspirations
Use the ideas below however best fits your life. Adopt them exactly as they are, adapt them to fit your needs, or use them as inspiration to create your own boundaries.
Create a recurring schedule for when your phone will be powered down and put away.
Minimize the number of apps on your devices, aka, delete the apps you waste a lot of your time on
Establish limits and parameters for particular devices, apps, or media. There’s nothing wrong with watching a movie or your favorite show, but a binge is not likely to lead you into greater rest and worship.
Establish “no device” zones, like the dinner table, the car, or while out with friends.
Explore activities that don’t require a phone, internet, or a screen. If you’re prone to vegging on Netflix, try picking up a book. If your family bonds over movies, try a board game or a walk in the park.
Take a weekly sabbath away from devices and screens.
Parents, develop best practices and guidelines for your children and family. Consider how your relationship with devices will affect your children’s relationship with devices.
